Note: Lake County is a small rural county. Online case management is limited compared to larger counties, so in-person or mail requests are often the most reliable path.

The Michigan Courts Case Search portal is the main tool for finding Lake County court dockets online. This free system covers all 57 circuit courts in Michigan, including the 28th. You can search by party name, case number, or attorney name. The portal shows you the Register of Actions (ROA), which is the official docket listing every event in a case from filing to final order.

Visit courts.michigan.gov/case-search/ to search Lake County court dockets. You do not need an account. Basic case information is free. The system does not show scanned document images, but it does show all docket entries, court dates, and case status. For document copies, you need to contact the clerk directly.

The Lake County official website has contact details for the Clerk's Office if you need more than what the state portal shows. Records in the county go back to 1871. Older records may not be in the online system at all and require an in-person visit.

Online searches through the state portal are not official court records and should not be used for background check purposes. For official records, contact the Lake County Clerk directly.

How to Request Lake County Court Records

You have three ways to get Lake County court docket records: in person, by mail, or through the online state portal for basic case info. In-person visits let you review the full case file and get copies right away. Mail requests take three to five business days for standard cases.

To request records by mail, send a written request to the Lake County Clerk at 800 Tenth Street, Baldwin, MI 49304. Include the case number if you have it, the names of the parties, and the approximate filing date. Add a check or money order for the copy fees. Standard copies cost $1.00 per page. Certified copies run $10.00 for the first page and $1.00 for each page after that.

For searches that take more time, a search fee of $5.00 to $10.00 may apply. The clerk's office does not give legal advice, but staff can help you find a specific case or document.

Michigan court rules under MCR 8.119 govern public access to court records in the state. Most civil and criminal case records are open to the public. Some records are restricted, including personal protection orders (PPO), juvenile cases, HYTA matters, and sealed cases.

What Lake County Docket Records Contain

A court docket in Lake County is the running record of everything that happens in a case. The Register of Actions (ROA) is the formal name for this record. It lists every filing, motion, hearing date, order, and judgment in the case. The ROA is what courts use to track case progress, and it is the document most people need when they want to check on a case.

Lake County docket records cover civil cases (lawsuits, contract disputes, property matters), criminal cases (felonies charged in circuit court), family law (divorce, custody, support), and probate matters (estates, guardianships). District court cases such as misdemeanors and traffic matters are handled separately by the 85th District Court.

Each docket entry in Lake County typically shows:

  • Case number and case type
  • Party names (plaintiff, defendant, petitioner, respondent)
  • Filing dates and docket events
  • Scheduled hearing dates and results
  • Court orders and judgments
  • Attorney names if parties are represented

Note: Document images are not available through the online portal. The online system shows docket entries only. For copies of the actual filings or orders, you must contact the Lake County Clerk's Office.

Restricted Records in Lake County

Not all Lake County court records are public. Michigan law restricts certain case types from online access and sometimes from public access entirely. Under MCR 3.705, personal protection order (PPO) cases are not available online. Juvenile records are confidential under MCL 600.1750. Cases handled under the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act (HYTA) are sealed and not accessible through public searches.

First-time drug offenses handled under MCL 333.7411 are also restricted from online searches. The Michigan Clean Slate Law, passed in 2020, added automatic expungement for certain convictions after a waiting period. Cases that have been expunged will no longer appear in online searches. If you are searching for a case and cannot find it, it may have been sealed, expunged, or restricted under one of these rules.

For background check purposes, the proper tool is the Michigan State Police ICHAT system at apps.michigan.gov/ICHAT. ICHAT provides official criminal history records for a fee of $10.00 per search. Online court records are not a substitute for an official background check.

Historical and Archived Records

Lake County records go back to 1871 when the county was formally organized. Older records from the county's early years may not be available through the online state portal. For historical court records, the Archives of Michigan holds case files for the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals. Contact the Archives at 702 W. Kalamazoo Street, Lansing, MI 48909, or call (517) 373-1408.

The Archives charges a general record search fee of $15.00 and $50.00 per Supreme Court or Court of Appeals case file. For Lake County trial court records that predate the online system, your best option is to contact the Lake County Clerk directly. Staff can tell you what is available and how far back the indexed records go.

Vital records such as birth, death, and marriage certificates from Lake County date back to 1867. These are maintained separately from court dockets and are handled by the same County Clerk's Office. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services handles statewide vital records searches for $34.00 per one-year search period.

Legal Help and Court Forms

If you need help understanding a Lake County court docket or filing your own case, several resources are available at no cost. Michigan Legal Help at michiganlegalhelp.org has plain-language guides on how court records work, how to file cases, and what your rights are as a self-represented party.

The State Court Administrative Office (SCAO) provides official court forms for all case types. You can download standard forms at courts.michigan.gov/SCAO-forms/. These forms are accepted at all Michigan courts including the 28th Circuit Court in Lake County. Using official forms helps ensure your filings are processed without delay.

For questions about filing electronic documents, Michigan uses the MiFILE system. Visit mifile.courts.michigan.gov to learn which courts accept e-filing and how to submit documents electronically. Not all courts in smaller counties are fully enrolled in MiFILE, so check with the Lake County Clerk before assuming electronic filing is available for your case type.
