Ingham County Court Docket Search Guide
Ingham County offers a specialized local search portal that is particularly useful for detailed searches. The Ingham County Court Record Search at courts.ingham.org requires specific search inputs: you must select which court to search (only one at a time), enter at least the first initial and at least two letters of the last name, and for criminal cases, provide the date of birth. You must also select the party type (plaintiff/petitioner or defendant/respondent) and the case type (civil/family or criminal/traffic).
The local portal covers criminal cases back to 2000 and all other Circuit and Probate cases back to 1986. PPO cases are excluded per MCR 3.705. The portal supports wildcard searches - for example, entering "SM" will return SMITH, SMITHTON, SMITH AUTO PARTS, and any other name starting with those two letters. This can be helpful when you are not sure of the exact spelling. Victim information is suppressed in all results.
For cases not covered by the local portal, use the statewide Michigan Courts Case Search portal, which includes the Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, and all 57 circuit courts. The statewide tool provides a broader search across multiple Michigan jurisdictions in a single search. Both tools are free to use.
The Ingham County website at ingham.org lists all county departments and can help you identify the right office to contact for specific records needs.
The county's main website provides navigation to courts, the clerk, and other public records resources across all Ingham County departments.
What You Need to Search Ingham County Dockets
When searching Ingham County court records through the local portal, you must provide enough information for the system to run a valid search. At minimum, you need the first initial and at least the first two letters of the last name. For criminal case searches, you also need the date of birth. Without date of birth, criminal searches often return too many results to be useful - common names can have dozens of matches.
The system requires you to pick one court at a time. If you are not sure whether a case was in Circuit Court or Probate Court, you may need to run separate searches. For district court cases in Lansing (54A, 54B) or Mason (55th), those are searched differently. Contact the specific district court for records from those divisions since the local portal focuses on Circuit and Probate records.
The Ingham County courts also note that because common names and birth dates can match multiple individuals, search results for criminal cases "may not be specific to the individual being searched." Always verify results through the Clerk's office before relying on them for any formal purpose. These search results are not official records.
Note: Ingham County's local court record search covers criminal cases back to 2000 and all other Circuit and Probate cases back to 1986 - older cases require an in-person visit.
Public Access Rules for Ingham County Court Records
Michigan's MCR 8.119 governs public access to all Ingham County court records. Most civil, criminal, and family law dockets are open to the public. You can request and receive copies of court records without being a party to the case. Under MCR 8.119(H)(5), courts must redact protected personal identifying information before releasing documents. Some PII in the documents will be removed before you receive copies.
Certain cases are not publicly accessible online. PPO cases are excluded under MCR 3.705. Juvenile records are sealed under MCL 600.1750. HYTA cases are not searchable. First-time drug offender cases under MCL 333.7411 are also excluded. Michigan's 2020 Clean Slate Law means some older convictions may have been expunged and will not appear in searches.
For official criminal background checks in the Lansing area, use the Michigan State Police ICHAT system. Court docket searches are not official background checks. The Ingham County court search portal itself states that results "are not to be considered the official record" and that "official court records may be reviewed at the Ingham County Circuit Court Clerk's Office."

Ingham County's courts are among the more active jurisdictions in the state, and e-filing participation tends to expand over time.
